In the coating industry, high-quality paint is not merely for providing a brilliant appearance. Its deeper value lies in its mechanical properties, and impact resistance is one of the core indicators for measuring the quality of the paint film.
Why is impact resistance so important?
Impact resistance directly reflects the coating film's ability to resist cracking, wrinkling, or peeling from the substrate when subjected to sudden external impact. Whether for appliance housings, automotive parts, or metal furniture, coatings inevitably encounter bumps and knocks during use. If impact resistance is insufficient, damage to the coating will expose the substrate, leading to rust and corrosion, and seriously compromising product service life.

Practical Guide: How to Perform Film Impact Resistance Testing?
We mainly use the film impact tester to complete this evaluation. The following is the standardized test procedure:
- Prepare test panels: Fix the standard test panels coated with the paint to be tested onto the base of the instrument, ensuring that the coated side faces up.
- Set parameters: Select a fixed-mass weight (common specification is 1kg).
- Free fall impact: Lift the weight to a preset height (e.g., 50cm), release it to fall freely, and precisely strike the surface of the test panel.
- Close observation: After the impact is complete, use a 4x magnifier to carefully inspect the impact point.
acceptance criteria
Under normal circumstances, if the coating at the impact point remains intact without obvious cracks, wrinkling, or peeling, it is considered qualified.
Advanced technique: By continuously adjusting the height of the weight or replacing it with weights of different masses, we can determine the maximum impact energy that the coating can withstand.
Summary
Although this test is simple and intuitive to perform, the adhesion and flexibility data it provides serve as a crucial guarantee that the coating will not peel or rust during long-term use. For manufacturers pursuing high-quality workmanship, the impact resistance test is an indispensable quality checkpoint.
