At PZSSS, one of the most frequently asked questions from customers is: “How many buckets of paint do I actually need to buy?” Buying too much wastes costs, while buying too little can lead to work stoppages due to material shortages. Mastering the calculation method for paint coverage rate is key to controlling budgets and improving project efficiency.
1. Theoretical Spreading Rate (TSR)
The theoretical spreading rate refers to the area that one liter of paint can cover under ideal conditions when applied to a specified thickness.
The calculation formula is as follows:
Theoretical Spreading Rate (m²/L) = (Volume Solids % × 10) / Dry Film Thickness (μm)
Example:
For instance, if a certain PZSSS product has a volume solids content of 60% and the required dry film thickness is 100μm, the calculation would be:
(60 × 10) / 100 = 6 m²/L
2. Consider the “Loss Factor”
Actual construction environments are not the same as laboratories. You must account for losses caused by the following factors:
– Surface Roughness: Steel surfaces after sandblasting tend to absorb more paint.
– Application Method: The loss rate for spray application (typically 30%-50%) is much higher than for roller or brush application.
– Weather Conditions: During outdoor operations, strong winds can blow away some paint mist.
3. Practical Spreading Rate (PSR)
To determine the actual quantity to purchase, you need to multiply the theoretical spreading rate by the estimated efficiency (e.g., if the loss is 30%, the efficiency factor is 0.7).
PZSSS Advantage:
Our product Technical Data Sheets (TDS) provide precise volume solids data, helping you reduce blind estimation and maximize the value of every drop of paint.
