| Product Name | Waterborne Epoxy Coating KF-WI100 |
|---|---|
| Recommended use | Waterborne epoxy coating is suitable for industrial coating applications related to waterborne epoxy coatings. |
| Use restrictions | For industrial coating use only. Waterborne epoxy coatings are more sensitive than solventborne types to the temperature and humidity of the application environment — stop application when temperature <10 °C or RH >85%. Not for continuously immersed environments (use the KF-CW200 waterproof coating instead). Waterborne epoxy ester coatings have lower salt-spray resistance than solventborne epoxy zinc-rich, and are not suitable for C5 corrosivity environments. |

3 Composition / information on ingredients
| Chemical substance | CAS number | Concentration range | GHS classification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waterborne epoxy resin dispersion (BPA-type epoxy resin emulsified in water) | 25068-38-6 (epoxy resin, 50-60% solids dispersed in water) | 40-60% (as epoxy resin dispersion, solids content 50-55%) | Skin Irrit. 2 (H315), Eye Irrit. 2 (H319), Skin Sens. 1 (H317) — the hazards come mainly from the epoxy resin solids fraction. |
| Water-reducible amine hardener (Water-reducible amine hardener / Amine adduct in aqueous solution) | Mixture (no single CAS); typical amine raw materials: modified adducts of 2855-13-2 (IPDA) and 112-24-3 (TETA, triethylenetetramine) | Component B: 40-55% (amine adduct solids content in water) | Skin Irrit. 2 (H315), Eye Irrit. 2 (H319), Skin Sens. 1B (H317), Aquatic Chronic 3 (H412) |
| Water | 7732-18-5 | 20-40% (used in the formulation as diluent and dispersion medium) | Non-hazardous substance |
| Propylene glycol methyl ether (Propylene glycol monomethyl ether / 1-Methoxy-2-propanol) | 107-98-2 | 2-5% (co-solvent / film-forming aid) | Flam. Liq. 3 (H226), STOT SE 3 (H336); per GHS: below 10% concentration the mixture is not classified as a flammable liquid |
| Anti-flash rust additive (organic nitrite or carboxylate type) | 7632-00-0 (sodium nitrite, NaNO₂, present at <1% in some formulations) | <1% | Ox. Sol. 3 (H272), Acute Tox. 3 (H301), Aquatic Chronic 2 (H411) — present at very low concentration; the mixture as a whole does not trigger classification. |
4 First-aid measures
Inhalation
Move the patient to fresh air. Usually no serious risk (waterborne coatings have very low VOC content). If persistent coughing or breathing difficulty occurs, seek medical advice.
Skin contact
Wash thoroughly with plenty of running water and soap. Remove contaminated clothing. If irritation or rash develops, seek medical advice. Note: waterborne epoxy still contains sensitizing epoxy resin components — do not neglect skin protection merely because it is waterborne.
Eye contact
Rinse with clean water for at least 15 minutes, holding the eyelids open. If irritation persists, seek medical advice.
Ingestion
Rinse mouth with water (if conscious). Do not induce vomiting. If unwell, seek medical advice.
Most important symptoms and effects:Skin sensitisation — erythema, itching, contact dermatitis (symptoms may appear 24-48 hours after exposure). Eye irritation — redness, tearing. Acute health hazards of waterborne coatings are markedly lower than solventborne types, but the skin sensitisation risk of epoxy resin remains.
Conditions requiring immediate medical attention:Treat symptomatically. No specific antidote. Persons sensitive to epoxy resin should avoid re-exposure.
5 Fire-fighting measures
| Suitable extinguishing media | Waterborne coatings are non-flammable — select the appropriate extinguishing medium according to surrounding fire sources: water spray, CO₂, dry powder, foam. |
|---|---|
| Inappropriate Extinguishing Media | No specific restrictions (water-based product, non-flammable). |
| Specific hazards | In a fire, cured epoxy coating can generate CO, CO₂, aldehydes and phenols. Waterborne epoxy coating itself will not support or sustain combustion. |
| Special protective equipment for firefighters | Firefighters: standard PPE + SCBA (treat as an ordinary building fire). |
Fire risk of waterborne epoxy coatings is markedly lower than that of solventborne products. Fire-fighting water may contain epoxy/amine components and should be contained as far as possible.
6 Spill release measures
Operator protection:Wear protective gloves and goggles. Waterborne product poses no flammability risk. Avoid skin contact.
Environmental precautions:Prevent major spills from entering water bodies — amines are toxic to aquatic organisms. Waterborne epoxy disperses in water (rather than floating like solventborne types), making recovery harder — handle promptly with absorbent material.
Containment and cleaning methods:Absorb with absorbent material (sand, sawdust, universal absorbent). If partly cured — remove mechanically. Wash contaminated surfaces with water (use the minimum amount of water). Collect the wash water as hazardous waste; do not discharge into the sewer.
7 Handling and storage
Precautions for safe handling
Use in well-ventilated areas. Although VOC is very low, inhalation of spraying aerosols must still be avoided. Avoid skin contact. Pot life after mixing is shorter than solventborne epoxy — typically 2-4 hours at 25 °C, shorter at elevated temperature. Waterborne epoxy does not cure at low temperature (<10 °C) — both substrate and ambient temperature must exceed 10 °C. Avoid application when relative humidity >85% (water evaporation is impeded, which may cause blushing and reduced adhesion).
Storage Conditions
Store in a cool place at 5-35 °C. Waterborne epoxy must not be frozen! Freezing breaks the emulsion and the product is lost. Keep the container closed — water evaporation changes product performance. Shelf life: 12 months in the original package. Note: waterborne products are more prone to bacterial contamination than solventborne ones — use as soon as possible after opening. Keep away from children.
8 Exposure controls / personal protection
| substance | PC-TWA | PC-STEL | Standard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Propylene glycol methyl ether (PM) | 50 ppm / 184 mg/m³ (PC-TWA, 皮) | 100 ppm / 368 mg/m³ (PC-STEL) | GBZ 2.1-2019; ACGIH TLV-TWA: 50 ppm |
| Epoxy resin (inert particulates, reference) | 8 mg/m³ (PC-TWA, total dust) | — | GBZ 2.1-2019 Annex A.12 (reference: inert dust) |
Engineering controls
Waterborne coatings have very low VOC — under normal application conditions the OEL is met without special ventilation. Spraying still requires local exhaust or general ventilation to control aerosols. Provide emergency eyewash facilities.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
| Respiratory system | General brush/roller application: respiratory protection usually not required (VOC very low). Spraying: wear a particulate-filtering half-mask (P2/P3). Persons allergic to epoxy resin must wear respiratory protection during all operations. |
|---|---|
| Hand protection | Nitrile rubber gloves (≥0.3 mm) or chloroprene rubber. Note: co-solvents in waterborne formulations can promote skin penetration — change gloves promptly once contaminated. |
| Eye protection | Wear splash goggles. |
| Skin and body | Standard work clothing or disposable protective clothing. Change and wash contaminated clothing. |

10 Stability and reactivity
| Reactivity | Mixing waterborne epoxy with waterborne amine hardener produces a room-temperature curing reaction — the reaction rate is lower than that of solventborne systems. |
|---|---|
| Chemical stability | Stable under recommended conditions. Waterborne epoxy emulsions are sensitive to freeze-thaw cycles — freezing irreversibly breaks the emulsion. |
| Possibility of hazardous reactions | The exothermic reaction after bulk mixing is milder than in solventborne systems (the water dissipates heat), yet large quantities of mixed product should still not be left in closed containers. |
| Conditions to avoid | Freezing temperature (<0 °C) — irreversible demulsification. High temperature (>50 °C) — accelerates reaction and shortens pot life. Accidental mixing with strong acids or strong alkalis. |
| Incompatible materials | Strong oxidizers, strong acids (pH<3) and strong alkalis (pH>12) — may rapidly break or cure the waterborne epoxy. Some polyvalent metal salts (e.g. Al³⁺, Fe³⁺) can cause demulsification. |
| Hazardous decomposition products | Curing or combustion: CO, CO₂, NOx, amine compounds, trace aldehydes. Similar to other epoxy systems. |
11 Toxicological information
Acute Toxicity
| Routes of exposure | indicator | Test species |
|---|---|---|
| oral ld50 | >5,000 mg/kg (rat, waterborne epoxy mixture, calculated) | |
| dermal ld50 | >5,000 mg/kg(兔, 计算) | |
| inhalation lc50 | Not applicable (extremely low VOC; vapours do not reach hazardous concentrations) |
Other toxicological information
| Skin corrosion / irritation | Causes skin irritation (H315). Free amine concentration potentially remaining in waterborne formulations is lower than in solventborne ones, yet still irritating. |
|---|---|
| Serious eye damage/eye irritation | Causes eye irritation (H319). Waterborne amine hardener splashed into the eye is less corrosive than solventborne amines (diluted by water), but must still be rinsed thoroughly. |
| May cause allergy from inhalation or skin contact | Contains epoxy resin components (molecular weight range includes sensitizing fractions) — may cause skin sensitisation (H317). In waterborne epoxy the resin is present as an emulsion, so dermal absorption may be lower than solventborne types (absence of penetration-enhancing organic solvents), but the sensitisation risk remains — it must not be disregarded. |
| Carcinogenicity | Not classified as a carcinogen. The water-based formula contains no IARC/NTP carcinogens (at significant concentrations). |
| Specific target organ toxicity - single exposure | No significant risk (low VOC, PM <5%, does not trigger STOT SE 3 classification) |
| Specific target organ toxicity - repeated exposure | No known specific target organ toxicity (repeated exposure). See skin sensitisation. |
| Aspiration hazard | None — waterborne high-viscosity liquid; does not trigger inhalation hazard classification. |
12 Ecological information
Ecotoxicity
| Species | indicator |
|---|---|
| fish 96h lc50 | >100 mg/L (water-based epoxy mixture, calculated); amine curing agent: LC₅₀ (fish) = 10-100 mg/L |
| daphnia 48h ec50 | >100 mg/L (mixture total); amine hardener: EC₅₀ (Daphnia) ≈ 1-10 mg/L |
| algae 72h ec50 | >100 mg/L |
Persistence and degradability
Waterborne epoxy mixture disperses in water but does not dissolve — uncured epoxy resin hydrolyses/biodegrades slowly in water. After curing it is a stable solid. Propylene glycol methyl ether (PM) is readily biodegradable (OECD 301: >90% in 28 days).
Bioaccumulative potential
Epoxy resin has high molecular weight (>900 g/mol) and high polarity, so it is not bioaccumulative. PM: log Kow < 1, BCF very low.
Mobility in soil
Epoxy resin emulsion has low to moderate mobility in soil (moves with water), but contact with calcium and magnesium ions in soil may break the emulsion and form insoluble precipitates, reducing mobility. PM is highly mobile in soil (log Koc about 0.5).
Other adverse effects
Amine hardener is harmful to aquatic life (category 3). Large quantities of uncured product should not enter water bodies. Cured epoxy coating is inert. The overall environmental footprint of waterborne epoxy is markedly better than solventborne types (VOC reduced by more than 90%, low carbon emissions, low depletion of non-renewable resources).
13 Disposal
Disposal method:Liquid paint waste and spent hardener: HW12 (dyes, paint waste, 900-299-12). Waste disposal of waterborne coatings is the same as for solventborne ones — do not be misled by "waterborne" into diluting and discharging! It remains hazardous waste. Recommended disposal: high-temperature incineration or physico-chemical treatment. Aqueous wash water from equipment cleaning: collect and treat through the on-site wastewater treatment system (coagulation-sedimentation plus biological treatment) — do not discharge directly.
Contaminated packaging disposal:Non-emptied containers: HW49 (900-041-49). Where waterborne epoxy containers are allowed to dry and cure naturally (residue becomes an inert solid), emptied containers may be disposed of as general solid waste (confirm with the local environmental authority). Plastic pails: recycling recommended (if clean), otherwise dispose as hazardous waste.
