4 First-aid measures
Inhalation
Move the patient to fresh air immediately. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen by trained personnel. If breathing has stopped, perform artificial respiration. Isocyanate inhalation may cause respiratory allergy (asthma-like symptoms); symptoms may be delayed for several hours even after exposure ends. Seek medical attention immediately.
Skin contact
Remove contaminated clothing. Wash thoroughly with plenty of running water and mild soap (polyethylene glycol 400 is better and effectively removes isocyanate). If irritation persists or a rash appears, seek medical advice. Wash contaminated clothing thoroughly.
Eye contact
Rinse immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, lifting the eyelids during rinsing. Remove contact lenses if easy to do so, then continue rinsing. Seek medical attention immediately.
Ingestion
Rinse mouth with water. Do not induce vomiting (risk of inhalation). Seek medical attention immediately.
Most important symptoms and effects:Isocyanates: inhalation may cause sensitisation — repeated exposure, even at very low concentrations, can trigger asthma. Symptoms include wheezing, chest tightness and breathing difficulty, which may be delayed until 4-12 hours after exposure. Skin sensitisation — allergic contact dermatitis. Solvent vapour: dizziness, drowsiness. Eyes: watering, redness.
Conditions requiring immediate medical attention:Persons sensitised to isocyanates are permanently prohibited from any renewed exposure to products containing isocyanates. After inhalation of isocyanates, medical observation for at least 24 hours is required even without symptoms (delayed asthma is possible). Physician: symptomatic treatment; there is no specific antidote. Show this MSDS to the physician.
5 Fire-fighting measures
| Suitable extinguishing media | Dry powder extinguishing agent, carbon dioxide (CO₂), alcohol-resistant foam (AFFF-AR), water fog. |
|---|---|
| Inappropriate Extinguishing Media | Direct water jet/solid stream. Water reacts with isocyanate to form CO₂ and insoluble polyurea (slow reaction, but it may raise container pressure during large spills). |
| Specific hazards | Combustion produces toxic gases: carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO₂), nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrogen cyanide (HCN, formed in trace amounts when isocyanate burns), isocyanate vapor. Closed containers may burst when heated in a fire. |
| Special protective equipment for firefighters | Firefighters must wear SCBA and full chemical protective clothing. Move containers exposed to fire away (if feasible and safe). |
Fire-fighting run-off is hazardous waste; contain and collect it for disposal by a licensed facility. Do not discharge into sewers or natural waters. Cool closed containers exposed to fire with water spray.
6 Spill release measures
Operator protection:Wear full PPE including a supplied-air respirator (mandatory when handling isocyanate hardener). Remove all ignition sources. Ensure adequate ventilation. Avoid any skin contact (isocyanates can sensitize the skin).
Environmental precautions:Prevent entry into drains and natural waters. Dike with sand or earth. If a large spill contaminates water bodies, notify downstream users and the environmental authority.
Containment and cleaning methods:Small spill: absorb with absorbent material (vermiculite, sand, universal absorbent). Collect in closed, labeled containers. Use a dedicated decontamination solution (aqueous solution with 5% ammonia + detergent can decompose residual isocyanate). Large spill: recover with an explosion-proof pump. After absorbing residues with absorbent material, treat contaminated surfaces with decontamination solution.
7 Handling and storage
Precautions for safe handling
Handle under adequate ventilation conditions (local exhaust ventilation recommended). Take extreme care when using isocyanate curing agents — they are strong respiratory sensitisers. Application in a spray booth or an area with a high-efficiency filtered exhaust system is recommended. Keep away from heat, sparks and open flames. No smoking. Take anti-static measures. Avoid breathing vapour and aerosols/spray mist. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Eating and drinking are prohibited in work areas. Wash hands and face thoroughly after handling. Persons with asthma, a history of allergy or chronic respiratory disease should not work with isocyanates — a medical evaluation before starting work is recommended.
Storage Conditions
Store in a cool (5-30°C), dry, well-ventilated warehouse. Keep containers tightly closed — the isocyanate hardener reacts with moisture to form CO₂ (which can swell or burst containers; hardener containers therefore usually have special vent caps or nitrogen blanketing). Store strictly separated from water, alcohols, amines and strong alkalis. Store Component A and Component B separately. Storage life: 12 months in original sealed packaging.
8 Exposure controls / personal protection
| substance | PC-TWA | PC-STEL | Standard |
|---|---|---|---|

Engineering controls
Maintain an air velocity ≥0.5 m/s in the spray booth (manual spraying). Periodically monitor airborne isocyanate concentration (preferably using NCO-specific test strips or sampling tubes + liquid chromatography). Other requirements are the same as for epoxy systems.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
| Respiratory system | Spraying isocyanate-containing coatings: wear a supplied-air respirator (SAR) or powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR with A/P combination cartridge). Routine light contact (brushing, roller application): full-face organic vapour/particulate combination filter (A2P3). Note: the odour threshold of isocyanate vapour is above the OEL — smell cannot be used to judge safety. Air-purifying respirators are not suitable for environments with isocyanate concentrations >10×OEL. |
|---|---|
| Hand protection | Nitrile rubber gloves, ≥0.4 mm. Chloroprene rubber gloves. Do not use natural latex (insufficient protection). |
| Eye protection | Chemical splash goggles or face shield. When spraying, use the full-face mask that goes with the supplied-air respirator. |
| Skin and body | Full-body protective suit (Tychem® CPF 3/4 or equivalent). Hood, shoe covers. All skin must be covered. Pay attention to gaps such as collar and cuffs. |

10 Stability and reactivity
| Reactivity | Stable under normal conditions. The isocyanate hardener reacts with water to form CO₂ and polyurea — a slow but continuous reaction. |
|---|---|
| Chemical stability | Stable under recommended storage conditions. |
| Possibility of hazardous reactions | The reaction of isocyanate with water produces CO₂ gas, which in closed containers may raise pressure and cause containers to swell or burst. Reactions with alcohols and amines are strongly exothermic. When mixing large quantities (>5 L), take care to dissipate heat. |
| Conditions to avoid | High temperatures, open flames, moist air (for the hardener). Avoid contact with water and moisture (especially the isocyanate hardener component). |
| Incompatible materials | Water, aqueous solutions, moisture (react with the curing agent). Alcohols, amines, strong alkalis (react violently with the curing agent). Strong oxidisers. Metal catalysts (organometallic compounds of tin, bismuth, etc. — accelerate the isocyanate reaction). |
| Hazardous decomposition products | Combustion: CO, CO₂, NOx, HCN (trace). Thermal decomposition (>150°C): isocyanate monomers may be released. Reaction with water: CO₂ (non-hazardous but can cause suffocation risk in confined spaces). |
11 Toxicological information
Acute Toxicity
| Routes of exposure | indicator | Test species |
|---|---|---|
| oral ld50 | >2,000 mg/kg (rat, mixture calculation); HDI trimer: LD₅₀ oral rat > 5,000 mg/kg | |
| dermal ld50 | >2,000 mg/kg; HDI trimer: LD₅₀ dermal rabbit > 5,000 mg/kg | |
| inhalation lc50 | Butyl acetate: LC₅₀ (rat, 4 h) > 21 mg/L; HDI trimer aerosol: LC₅₀ (rat, 4 h) > 0.44 mg/L |
Other toxicological information
| Skin corrosion / irritation | Causes skin irritation. Butyl acetate and xylene can strip skin oils; repeated contact leads to cracking. |
|---|---|
| Serious eye damage/eye irritation | Causes serious eye irritation. Vapour may irritate the eyes. |
| May cause allergy from inhalation or skin contact | HDI oligomer/polymer (isocyanate hardener) is a strong respiratory sensitiser (H334). Repeated inhalation, even at concentrations well below the OEL, can cause occupational asthma. Once sensitised, very low concentrations (<0.001 ppm)也可触发哮喘发作。Skin ContactIsocyanate也可引起皮肤过敏(H317)。交叉致敏:对一种Isocyanate过敏者通常对OtherIsocyanate(TDI/MDI/IPDI)也过敏。 |
| Carcinogenicity | Not classified as a carcinogen. IARC/ACGIH/NTP have not classified HDI polymers as carcinogens. TiO₂ (the white pigment used in some colour formulas): IARC 2B (possibly carcinogenic to humans), inhalable dust form only — this classification does not apply in liquid coatings. |
| Specific target organ toxicity - single exposure | Inhalation of solvent vapour may cause drowsiness/dizziness. Isocyanate vapour may irritate the respiratory tract. |
| Specific target organ toxicity - repeated exposure | Long-term solvent exposure (above the OEL): effects on the central nervous system, liver and kidneys. Isocyanates: the main risk of repeated exposure is respiratory sensitisation (asthma) rather than cumulative organ toxicity. |
| Aspiration hazard | Swallowing and entry into airways may be fatal (contains xylene solvents). |
12 Ecological information
Ecotoxicity
| Species | indicator |
|---|---|
| fish 96h lc50 | Butyl acetate: LC₅₀ (fish) = 18–62 mg/L; HDI trimer: LC₅₀ (fish, 96 h) > 100 mg/L |
| daphnia 48h ec50 | Butyl acetate: EC₅₀ (Daphnia) = 72.8 mg/L; HDI trimer: EC₅₀ (Daphnia, 48 h) > 100 mg/L |

Persistence and degradability
The organic solvent components (butyl acetate, xylene, PGMEA) are all readily biodegradable. Acrylic resins and HDI polymers are not readily biodegradable but can react with water to form inert polyurea (environmental behaviour similar to insoluble organic solids).
Bioaccumulative potential
Butyl acetate: log Kow = 1.78, very low BCF. HDI polymer: high molecular weight, low water solubility, low bioavailability, not bioaccumulative.
Mobility in soil
Solvent components have moderate to high mobility in soil. Polymer components are essentially immobile in soil.
Other adverse effects
Harmful to aquatic life (H412). VOCs contribute to photochemical ozone formation in the atmosphere. Isocyanates react with water to form inert polyurea — low environmental risk.
13 Disposal
Disposal method:For waste paint disposal, refer to the F01 epoxy zinc-rich primer. HW12 (dye and paint wastes, 900-299-12) and HW06 (waste organic solvents, 900-402-06). Isocyanate-containing waste curing agent: chemical deactivation with a decontamination solution (5% ammonia + water and detergent) is recommended before routine disposal. Liquid waste must never be poured into drains. High-temperature incineration (>1,100°C) at a licensed hazardous-waste incineration plant is recommended.
Contaminated packaging disposal:Containers not completely emptied are hazardous waste. Metal drums: recyclable after complete emptying. Plastic drums: dispose of as hazardous waste. Empty curing-agent drums: rinsing with water produces CO₂ and heat — do not simply rinse with water! Treat with a decontamination solution or dispose of directly as hazardous waste.
