Most important symptoms and effects:
Conditions requiring immediate medical attention:
5 Fire-fighting measures
| Suitable extinguishing media | Waterborne fire-retardant coatings: CO₂/dry powder/water. |
|---|---|
| Unsuitable extinguishing media | |
| Specific hazards | The fire-retardant coating itself is designed to be fire-resistant — it intumesces in a fire to form a char layer (releasing non-combustible gases: NH₃/CO₂/H₂O vapour). Does not support combustion. |
| Special protective equipment for firefighters | Standard firefighting PPE |
6 Spill release measures
Operator protection:PPE。
Environmental precautions:Prevent large quantities from entering water bodies — phosphates can cause eutrophication.
Containment and cleaning methods:absorb with absorbent material.
7 Handling and storage
Precautions for safe handling
Waterborne fire-retardant coatings: applied like emulsion paint. Solvent-based: fire-retardant coatings are usually very thick (up to 25 mm) — note the extremely long drying time.
Storage Conditions
Waterborne: protect from freezing at 5-35°C. Solvent-based: keep away from ignition sources. Shelf life 12 months (waterborne)/12 months (solvent-based).
8 Exposure controls / personal protection
| substance | PC-TWA | PC-STEL | Standard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Melamine (dust) | 8 mg/m³ (total dust, reference) | — | GBZ 2.1-2019 Annex A.12 (reference inert dust) |
Engineering controls
Spraying thick-layer fire-retardant coatings generates large amounts of dust/aerosol — ensure adequate ventilation plus local exhaust.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
| Respiratory system | P2/P3 particulate filter mask (when spraying) |
|---|---|
| Hand protection | Standard work gloves |
| Eye protection | Safety glasses |
| Skin and body | Standard work clothing |
9 Physical and chemical properties
| Appearance | White/grey thick paste (uncured wet state); various colours (per colour card) |
|---|---|
| Relative Density | 1.2-1.8 (high filler content) |
| Solids content | 60-80 % (waterborne); 55-70 % (solvent-borne) |
10 Stability and reactivity
| Reactivity | |
|---|---|
| Chemical stability | |
| Possibility of hazardous reactions | |
| Conditions to avoid | Waterborne: freezing. |
| Incompatible materials | |
| Hazardous decomposition products | In fire: intumescent fire-retardant coatings react as designed — NH₃ (ammonia), CO₂, H₂O vapour, char layer. Ammonia is irritant but released in small amounts. |
