3 Composition / information on ingredients
| Chemical substance | CAS number | Concentration range | GHS classification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ethyl silicate (tetraethyl orthosilicate, TEOS, partially hydrolyzed) | 78-10-4 (TEOS monomer); 68412-37-3 (partial hydrolyzate) | 15-30%(in the binder) | Flam. Liq. 3 (H226), Acute Tox. 4 (H332), Eye Irrit. 2 (H319) |
| zinc powder (Zinc powder) | 7440-66-6 | 60-80% | Aquatic Acute 1 (H400), Aquatic Chronic 1 (H410) |
| Ethanol / isopropanol (Ethanol/Isopropanol, solvent) | 64-17-5 / 67-63-0 | 10-20% | Flam. Liq. 2 (H225), Eye Irrit. 2 (H319), STOT SE 3 (H336) |
4 First-aid measures
Inhalation
Move to fresh air. Seek medical attention.
Skin contact
Wash with soap and water. Ethyl silicate vapour may irritate the skin.
Eye contact
Rinse for 15 minutes. Seek medical attention. Ethyl silicate may hydrolyse inside the eye and cause irritation.
Ingestion
Do not induce vomiting. Rinse mouth with water. Seek medical attention.
Most important symptoms and effects:Solvent vapour: dizziness and drowsiness. Zinc powder: see F01 zinc-rich epoxy.
Conditions requiring immediate medical attention:Treat symptomatically.
5 Fire-fighting measures
| Suitable extinguishing media | CO₂、Dry powder, alcohol-resistant foam(alcohol-type solvents require alcohol-resistant foam (AR-AFFF)) |
|---|---|
| Inappropriate Extinguishing Media | |
| Specific hazards | The flame of burning alcohol solvent is almost invisible (pale blue). Combustion products: CO, CO₂. Zinc powder generates ZnO fume at high temperature. |
| Special protective equipment for firefighters | SCBA |
6 Spill release measures
Operator protection:PPE。remove ignition sources——Alcohol solvents are highly flammable.
Environmental precautions:Prevent entry into water bodies; zinc is highly toxic to aquatic life.
Containment and cleaning methods:Inert absorbent material. Explosion-proof tools and equipment.
7 Handling and storage
Precautions for safe handling
Keep away from all ignition sources. Alcohol solvent vapour pressure is high — ensure adequate ventilation. Anti-static measures. Ethyl silicate hydrolyses slowly in humid air — keep containers tightly closed.
Storage Conditions
Cool storage at 5-30°C. Strictly waterproof and moisture-proof (ethyl silicate reacts with water). Store the zinc powder component separately from alcohol solvents. Shelf life: 12 months per component when stored separately.
8 Exposure controls / personal protection
| substance | PC-TWA | PC-STEL | Standard |
|---|---|---|---|
| ethanol | 1,900 mg/m³ (PC-TWA, ref. ACGIH: 1,000 ppm) | — | GBZ 2.1-2019 (not listed, ref. ACGIH) |
| isopropanol | 350 mg/m³ | 700 mg/m³ | GBZ 2.1-2019 |
Engineering controls
Explosion-proof ventilation equipment. Alcohol solvent vapour is heavier than air.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
| Respiratory system | Combination half-mask for organic vapour / particles(A/P2) |
|---|---|
| Hand protection | Nitrile or PVA gloves (alcohol solvents) |
| Eye protection | Safety goggles |
| Skin and body | Antistatic protective suit |
9 Physical and chemical properties
| Appearance | Grey liquid (zinc grey) |
|---|---|
| Odor | Characteristic alcohol odor |
| Flash Point | Approx. 12-15°C (closed cup, contains ethanol/isopropanol) — highly flammable! |
| Relative Density | 1.5-2.1 |
| Solubility | binder reacts with moisture(Hydrolysis-condensation curing) |
| Solid content | 55-70%(zinc powder+silicate binder) |
10 Stability and reactivity
| Reactivity | ethyl silicate hydrolyzes and condenses with water/moisture——This is the curing mechanism. The reaction produces ethanol. |
|---|---|
| Chemical stability | |
| Possibility of hazardous reactions | |
| Conditions to avoid | Humid air (causes premature curing of the product). High temperature. Open flame. |
| Incompatible materials | Water, moisture (curing reaction). Strong acids, strong bases. |
| Hazardous decomposition products |
11 Toxicological information
Acute Toxicity
| Routes of exposure | indicator | Test species |
|---|---|---|
| oral ld50 | >2,000 mg/kg(Mixture) | |
| inhalation lc50 | ethanol vapor: LC₅₀ > 20 mg/L/4h(低毒) |
Other toxicological information
| May cause allergy from inhalation or skin contact | Not classified. Note: the curing agent (alcohol solution) has none of the sensitising properties of epoxy/isocyanate — a major safety advantage of this inorganic system. |
|---|---|
| Carcinogenicity | Not classified |
| Aspiration hazard | Contains alcohol solvents — swallowing/inhalation risk relatively low compared with other solvents (alcohols have low viscosity but high volatility) |
12 Ecological information
Persistence and degradability
Bioaccumulative potential
Mobility in soil
Other adverse effects
13 Disposal
Disposal method:HW12 (900-299-12). Zinc-containing waste requires special handling — do not mix with acids (hydrogen gas is generated).
Contaminated packaging disposal:
