4 First-aid measures
Inhalation
Move the casualty to fresh air immediately. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Seek medical attention immediately. Note: amine hardener vapours/aerosols are strongly irritating to the respiratory tract.
Skin contact
Immediately remove all contaminated clothing. Wash thoroughly with plenty of running water and soap for at least 15 minutes. Amine curing agents can cause skin corrosion/severe irritation - washing must be prompt and thorough. If irritation persists, seek medical advice.
Eye contact
Immediately flush with plenty of water for at least 15-20 minutes, holding the eyelids open. Amine curing agents can cause serious eye damage! Seek medical advice immediately, preferably an ophthalmologist.
Ingestion
Rinse mouth with water (if conscious). Do not induce vomiting. Seek medical attention immediately.
Most important symptoms and effects:Amine hardener: skin contact can cause severe pain, redness, blisters and chemical burns (alkali burns). Eye contact — severe pain, risk of corneal damage. Epoxy resin: skin sensitisation — erythema, itching, rash. Inhalation of hardener aerosol — coughing, breathing difficulty, burning sensation in the throat.
Conditions requiring immediate medical attention:Amine burns: rinsing with plenty of water is the critical first step. Doctor: symptomatic treatment. No specific antidote. Persons allergic to epoxy resin should avoid re-exposure.
5 Fire-fighting measures
| Suitable extinguishing media | Carbon dioxide, dry powder, foam, water mist. |
|---|---|
| Unsuitable extinguishing media | Direct water jet. |
| Specific hazards | Combustion produces CO, CO₂, NOx, ammonia (amine hardener). Closed containers may rupture when heated. |
| Special protective equipment for firefighters | Firefighters: self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) plus full protective clothing. |
Contain and collect fire-fighting run-off.
6 Spill release measures
Operator protection:Wear full PPE (pay special attention to corrosion-resistant gloves and goggles, as the product contains amine hardener). Remove ignition sources. Ensure adequate ventilation.
Environmental precautions:Prevent entry into sewers and water bodies. Amines are highly toxic to aquatic life.
Containment and cleaning methods:Small spill: absorb with absorbent material (sand, vermiculite). Large spill: dike to contain and recover using an explosion-proof pump. Clean contaminated surfaces with diluted acetic acid solution (5%) or citric acid solution to neutralise, then rinse with plenty of water. Regular coating spills can be cleaned with solvent (e.g. xylene or a dedicated thinner).
7 Handling and storage
Precautions for safe handling
Operate in a well-ventilated area. Even solvent-free products still contain a small amount of volatile organic compounds (e.g. benzyl alcohol). When handling the amine hardener, note: it is corrosive — avoid any skin contact. Mixing the epoxy resin and hardener produces an exothermic reaction — mix only as much as can be used within the pot life (typically 20-40 min @ 25°C), and immediately spread the mixture out on the floor after mixing (a thin layer dissipates heat quickly); do not leave it in the bucket for long periods (this can cause the bucket to overheat or even smoke). When applying anti-static flooring, the grounding copper foil must be laid at the same time.
Storage Conditions
Store cool and dry at 5-35°C. Keep Components A and B strictly separated. Keep hardener containers tightly sealed (amines react with airborne CO₂ to form carbamate precipitate — white bloom). Shelf life: 12 months (original sealed packaging). Solvent-free flooring coatings may crystallize at low temperatures (below 5°C) — warm them to dissolve the crystals before use.
8 Exposure controls / personal protection
| substance | PC-TWA | PC-STEL | Standard |
|---|---|---|---|
| 苯甲醇 | 10 mg/m³ (not listed in GB; ref. MAK value) | 20 mg/m³ | DFG MAK Commission (Germany) |
| Crystalline silica (inhalable dust, respirable) | 0.05 mg/m³ (PC-TWA, RCS) | — | GBZ 2.1-2019 (relevant for grinding cured epoxy floors) |
| Isophorone diamine (IPDA, vapour) | 3 mg/m³ (reference value) | 6 mg/m³ | Not listed in GB; refer to Swiss SUVA OEL |
Engineering controls
General ventilation plus local exhaust ventilation. Forced ventilation is required for large-volume application. When sanding cured flooring: use an industrial vacuum with high-efficiency filtration (H13 HEPA) or a wet-grinding process - to reduce the airborne concentration of inhalable crystalline silica dust.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
| Respiratory system | Normal application: half-mask with organic vapour/particulate combination filter (A2P2). Sanding flooring: at least a P3 particulate-filter half-mask (for crystalline silica dust); for heavy sanding use a powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR). Amine curing agent handling: full-face organic vapour cartridge. |
|---|---|
| Hand protection | Butyl rubber gloves or thick nitrile rubber (≥0.5 mm) gloves - amine curing agents can quickly penetrate thin gloves. Do not use natural latex gloves. Two layers of gloves are recommended (disposable inner layer + thick outer layer). |
| Eye protection | Chemical splash goggles + face shield. Mandatory when handling the amine hardener. |
| Skin and body | Chemical-resistant protective clothing. Long sleeves and trousers. Safety shoes. Change and wash contaminated clothing immediately. |
9 Physical and chemical properties

| VOC content | Solvent-free: <60 g/L; solventborne: <400 g/L; waterborne: <100 g/L |
10 Stability and reactivity
| Reactivity | Mixing epoxy + amine triggers an exothermic polymerisation reaction. In large batches the heat release can raise the temperature above 150°C — risk of self-accelerating decomposition. |
|---|---|
| Chemical stability | Stable under recommended conditions. |
| Possibility of hazardous reactions | Leaving a large mixed batch in the drum: exotherm -> rising temperature -> accelerated reaction -> more heat -> thermal runaway -> the drum may smoke, swell or even rupture. This is one of the greatest safety hazards in epoxy flooring application. |
| Conditions to avoid | High temperature (accelerates the exothermic reaction). Large mixed quantities kept sealed. Mixed material left standing without being spread out. Contact of the hardener with moisture/CO₂. |
| Incompatible materials | Strong oxidizers, strong acids. The amine hardener generally does not react violently with chemicals other than epoxy, but reacts slowly with water and CO₂. |
| Hazardous decomposition products | Combustion: CO, CO₂, NOx, ammonia, amine compounds. Thermal decomposition (>200°C): phenols, bisphenol A. |
11 Toxicological information
Acute Toxicity
| Routes of exposure | indicator | Test species |
|---|---|---|
| oral ld50 | >2,000 mg/kg (mixture, rat); amine hardener: LD₅₀ oral rat = 500-2,000 mg/kg (Category 4) | |
| dermal ld50 | 胺Curing Agent: LD₅₀ dermal rabbit > 1,000-2,000 mg/kg (Category4) | |
| inhalation lc50 | No significant acute inhalation toxicity (mixture ATE calculated from components > 5 mg/L/4h) |
Other toxicological information
| Skin corrosion / irritation | Amine hardeners can cause skin corrosion/serious irritation (H314 Category 1B). Epoxy resin binders cause skin irritation (H315). |
|---|---|
| Serious eye damage/eye irritation | 胺Curing Agent——Serious eye damage/eye irritation(H318Category1)。EpoxyBinder——眼刺激(H319)。 |
| May cause allergy from inhalation or skin contact | epoxy resin(MW<700)是已知skin sensitisers(H317)。胺Curing Agent也可能引起皮肤过敏。对epoxy resin过敏者通常在接触后24-72 hours出现症状。 |
| Carcinogenicity | Crystalline silica (quartz-sand filler) - IARC Group 1 (carcinogenic to humans), but this classification applies only to occupational exposure to inhalable crystalline silica dust (e.g. blasting, mining, stone processing). In the liquid/wet use of epoxy flooring coatings or in the fully cured coating, crystalline silica does not give rise to inhalable dust exposure. If dust is generated when sanding cured flooring - there is an exposure risk and appropriate respiratory protection must be worn. Epoxy resin and amine curing agents are not classified as carcinogenic. |
| Specific target organ toxicity - single exposure | Amine hardener vapours/aerosols can irritate the respiratory tract (H335). Solvent-borne type contains solvent — may cause drowsiness/dizziness (H336). |
| Specific target organ toxicity - repeated exposure | Long-term inhalation of respirable crystalline silica dust can cause silicosis (pulmonary fibrosis) and an increased risk of lung cancer (H372). This hazard applies only to dust-exposure scenarios during sanding. |
| Aspiration hazard | Solvent-borne formulation: swallowing and entry into the respiratory tract may be fatal (contains solvent). Solvent-free type: high viscosity, inhalation risk relatively low. |
12 Ecological information

Persistence and degradability
Epoxy resin is not readily biodegradable. The amine hardener is partially biodegradable (OECD 301: 20-60% in 28 d). Cured epoxy flooring is a highly stable thermoset plastic that degrades extremely slowly in the environment.
Bioaccumulative potential
Epoxy resin and amine hardener: high molecular weight / high polarity, low bioavailability, no significant bioaccumulation.
Mobility in soil
Uncured epoxy and amines have medium-to-low mobility in soil. Once cured, they are completely immobile (solid plastic).
Other adverse effects
Amines are toxic to aquatic life (Category 3). Do not discharge uncured product or washing water into water bodies. The fully cured flooring coating is inert to the environment.
13 Disposal
Disposal method:Liquid paint waste: HW12 (900-299-12). Waste hardener: HW12/HW06. Recommendation: send to a licensed hazardous waste incineration plant. Cured epoxy flooring solid waste (demolition waste): may be disposed of as construction waste / general industrial solid waste (fully cured epoxy resin is an inert solid), but confirm the classification guidance of the local environmental protection authority.
Contaminated packaging disposal:Non-emptied containers: hazardous waste (HW49). Emptied containers: metal for recycling; plastic via hazardous waste disposal. Empty hardener pails: do not rinse with water (spreads contamination) — rinse with a small amount of solvent (alcohol) and add the recovered rinse liquid to the next paint batch, or dispose of the empty pail directly as hazardous waste.
