4 First-aid measures

Inhalation

Move the casualty to fresh air immediately and keep them quiet and warm. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen by trained personnel. If breathing stops, start artificial respiration immediately (mouth-to-mouth or with a resuscitator). Seek medical attention immediately.

Skin contact

Remove all contaminated clothing and footwear. Wash the skin thoroughly with plenty of running water and soap (or a mild skin cleanser) for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention if irritation persists or a rash develops. Contaminated clothing and footwear must be washed before re-use.

Eye contact

Rinse eyes immediately with plenty of water or saline for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the eyelids. If contact lenses are present and easy to remove, remove them and continue rinsing. Seek medical attention immediately, preferably an ophthalmologist.

Ingestion

Rinse the mouth with water (only if the casualty is fully conscious). Do not induce vomiting due to the risk of aspiration. Seek medical attention immediately. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Turn the casualty's head to one side to prevent aspiration of vomit.

Most important symptoms and effects:Inhalation: Vapors may cause dizziness, drowsiness, headache, nausea. High concentrations can depress the central nervous system. Skin: Redness, irritation, itching. Repeated contact may cause allergic dermatitis. Eyes: Redness, pain, tearing. Ingestion: Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting. Zinc powder: Large inhalation of zinc oxide fumes (generated when welding/cutting zinc-containing coatings) can cause "Metal fume fever" — flu-like symptoms: fever, chills, muscle aches, usually subsiding within 24-48 hours.

Conditions requiring immediate medical attention:Symptomatic and supportive treatment. No specific antidote. Persons sensitised to epoxy resin should avoid further contact. For metal fume fever, treat symptomatically (rest, fever reduction); it usually resolves on its own after exposure ceases. Medical note: show this MSDS to the physician.

5 Fire-fighting measures

Suitable extinguishing mediacarbon dioxide (CO₂), dry chemical powder, alcohol-resistant foam (AFFF-AR), water spray (to cool containers exposed to the fire).
Unsuitable extinguishing mediaDirect water jets/stream (may spread burning liquid); water jets may disperse zinc dust and form a dust cloud.
Specific hazardsCombustion produces toxic and irritant gases: carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO₂), nitrogen oxides (NOx), aldehydes, organic acids. Zinc dust produces zinc oxide (ZnO) fume at high temperature — inhalation can cause metal fume fever. Closed containers heated in a fire may rupture and explode due to pressure build-up. Vapours are heavier than air and may travel along the ground to remote ignition sources, where flashback can occur.
Special protective equipment for firefightersFirefighters must wear self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA, positive-pressure full-face type) and full chemical protective clothing (including fire-resistant suits). When fighting fires in confined or poorly ventilated spaces, SCBA must be used; filter-type respirators are not permitted.

Firefighting water must not be discharged directly into drains or surface waters; collect it and have it treated by a licensed waste contractor. Cool closed containers exposed to fire with water mist, spraying from a safe distance from the burning side. If it can be done safely, move containers away from the fire area to a safe zone.

6 Spill release measures

Operator protection:Wear full personal protective equipment (see Section 8). Remove all ignition sources immediately. Ensure adequate ventilation. Keep unauthorised persons out of the spill area. Avoid breathing vapours. Avoid contact with skin and eyes.

Environmental precautions:Prevent the product from entering drainage systems, sewers, surface water, groundwater and soil. If watercourses or soil are contaminated, notify the local environmental authority immediately. Use sand or absorbent booms to berm and contain the spread of the liquid.

Containment and cleaning methods:Small spills: absorb the spill with inert absorbent material (sand, vermiculite, diatomaceous earth, universal binder). Collect into suitable labelled, closed containers. Large spills: berm to contain, and transfer with an explosion-proof pump into recovery containers. Treat residues with absorbent material. Clean contaminated surfaces with a suitable solvent (or water for water-borne formulations). Dispose of all waste in accordance with hazardous waste regulations.

7 Handling and storage

Precautions for safe handling

Follow standard industrial hygiene practices when using this product. Handle in a well-ventilated area; local exhaust ventilation is recommended. Keep away from all ignition sources — hot surfaces, sparks, open flames. No smoking. Take anti-static measures (earthing/bonding of equipment, anti-static footwear for operators). Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing. Avoid inhaling vapours and mists. Eating, drinking and smoking are prohibited in the work area. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. Change contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Beware of dust explosion hazards when handling large quantities of zinc dust — avoid generating dust clouds.

Storage Conditions

Store in a cool (5-30°C), dry, and well-ventilated warehouse. Keep containers tightly closed and open only when taking materials. Keep away from heat sources, sparks, and open flames. Avoid direct sunlight. Store separately from strong oxidizers (peroxides, nitrates, strong acids), strong bases, and amine compounds. Keep Component A and Component B separate. Pay attention to the product's shelf life—products beyond the expiration date must be retested before use. Storage period: 12 months in original unopened containers (below 25°C). Stacking height should not exceed 3 layers. Container material: Metal (tinplate/steel drum) or high-density polyethylene (HDPE).

Engineering controls

Provide adequate general ventilation and local exhaust to keep airborne concentrations below occupational exposure limits. Forced fresh-air supply is mandatory for work in confined spaces. Spray painting should be carried out in a spray booth equipped with a water curtain or dry-filter exhaust system. Periodically monitor airborne chemical concentrations in the workplace. Provide emergency eyewash stations and safety showers.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Respiratory systemGeneral application conditions (good ventilation): wear a half-mask respirator with combined organic vapour/particulate filter (A/P2 type cartridges). Spraying or poor ventilation: wear a full-face organic vapour respirator (A-type cartridge + particulate pre-filter) or a supplied-air respirator (SAR). Confined spaces or oxygen-deficient atmospheres: only positive-pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) or air-line supplied-air respirators may be used. Replace filter cartridges at regular intervals.
Hand protectionWear chemical-resistant gloves: nitrile rubber (Nitrile, ≥0.4mm thick) or neoprene rubber (Neoprene). Natural latex gloves are not recommended (organic solvents can rapidly penetrate). Breakthrough time: nitrile rubber for xylene >480 min (ASTM F739). Replace gloves immediately after contamination. Use protective barrier cream (isolation cream) for additional protection.
Eye protectionWear chemical-splash safety goggles (EN 166) or a full face mask. A face shield is recommended during spraying, pouring or mixing. Emergency eyewash facilities must be provided at the workplace.
Skin and bodyWear anti-static, chemical-resistant protective clothing (e.g. Tychem® or equivalent). Wear anti-static safety footwear. Long-sleeved work clothing is recommended. Remove and wash contaminated clothing immediately.

10 Stability and reactivity

ReactivityStable under normal conditions. Zinc dust oxidizes slowly in moist air.
Chemical stabilityStable under recommended storage and handling conditions.
Possibility of hazardous reactionsProlonged contact of zinc dust with water or humid air may generate traces of hydrogen (flammable gas). Reaction with strong acids releases hydrogen and heat. The curing reaction between epoxy resin and amine hardeners is exothermic — mixing large batches (>5 L) generates significant heat; ensure adequate heat dissipation.
Conditions to avoidHigh temperatures, open flames, sparks, static discharge. Avoid mixing large quantities in containers and then sealing (exothermic reaction + pressure build-up risk). For water-borne formulations, avoid contact with strong acids or strong alkalis.
Incompatible materialsStrong oxidizing agents (peroxides, permanganates, nitric acid, dichromates, concentrated hydrogen peroxide): risk of fire or explosion. Strong acids (sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid): react with zinc powder to release hydrogen gas and heat. Strong bases (sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide). Amine compounds (may cause premature curing of epoxy resin).
Hazardous decomposition productsNormal storage: no hazardous decomposition. In fire or high-temperature decomposition: carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO₂), nitrogen oxides (NOx), aldehydes (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde), low-molecular-weight hydrocarbons, zinc oxide (ZnO) fume. Thermal decomposition (>200°C): epoxy resin may decompose to form phenols and bisphenol A.

Other toxicological information

Skin corrosion / irritationCauses skin irritation (Category 2). Rabbit skin irritation test (OECD 404): the solventborne formulation is moderately irritating, with erythema and oedema scores of 2-3 (reversible within 72 h). The waterborne formulation is markedly less irritating than the solventborne one.
Serious eye damage/eye irritationCauses serious eye irritation (Category 2). May cause conjunctival congestion, tearing and temporary corneal epithelial damage. Vapours of n-butanol (present only in the solventborne formulation) can irritate the eyes above 50 ppm.
May cause allergy from inhalation or skin contactSkin contact may cause allergic skin reaction (Category 1).
CarcinogenicityThis product is not classified as a carcinogen overall. IARC: Xylene belongs to Group 3 (not classifiable as carcinogenic to humans). Epoxy resin is not listed on the IARC carcinogen list. ACGIH: Xylene A4 (not classifiable as a human carcinogen). Zinc and zinc compounds are not classified as carcinogens by IARC/NTP.
Specific target organ toxicity - single exposureInhalation of vapors may cause drowsiness or dizziness (Category 3). Vapors of xylene and n-butanol can depress the central nervous system. Symptoms of high-concentration exposure (>200 ppm xylene) include headache, dizziness, nausea, ataxia, and confusion. Inhalation of zinc oxide fumes (when welding/cutting coated materials) may cause metal fume fever.
Specific target organ toxicity - repeated exposureProlonged or repeated exposure to xylene (above occupational exposure limits) may affect the central nervous system (reported memory impairment, loss of concentration), the liver and the kidneys. Long-term exposure to n-butanol may cause hearing damage (synergistic with noise in animal studies). Epoxy resin: the sensitisation risk from prolonged skin contact outweighs systemic toxicity.
Aspiration hazardMay be fatal if swallowed and enters airways (Aspiration Tox. 1, mainly due to the xylene content). Low-viscosity hydrocarbon solvents may be aspirated into the lungs if vomiting occurs after swallowing, causing chemical pneumonia.

Persistence and degradability

Xylene: readily biodegradable in the environment. OECD 301D (Closed Bottle Test): 28-day degradation rate >70-90% (readily biodegradable). Half-life in water: days to weeks (volatilisation + biodegradation); half-life in air: approx. 1-2 days (reaction with OH radicals). Epoxy resin: not readily biodegradable (high-molecular-weight crosslinked polymer). Zinc: zinc is a persistent metal; it does not degrade in the environment but can undergo transformations of chemical form.

Bioaccumulative potential

Xylene: log Kow = 3.12-3.20, BCF = 6-25.9 (low bioaccumulation). n-Butanol: log Kow = 0.88, BCF < 10(very low)。epoxy resin:molecular weight>Not bioaccumulative at 700. Zinc: can bioaccumulate in aquatic organisms (BCF ranges: fish 100-1,000, shellfish 1,000-10,000), but zinc is an essential trace element, and organisms have regulatory mechanisms.

Mobility in soil

Xylene has moderate mobility in soil (log Koc = 2.1-2.7, Koc = 238-472 L/kg). n-Butanol is highly mobile in soil (log Koc approx. 0.4). Epoxy resin is essentially immobile in soil (high-molecular-weight solid). Zinc mobility in soil depends on pH — mobility increases under acidic conditions; under neutral to alkaline conditions mobility is low, binding mainly to soil organic matter and clay minerals.

Other adverse effects

Toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects (Category 2). Zinc's toxicity to aquatic organisms is the main basis of the GHS classification. The product contains zinc dust — uncured product or waste must not enter water bodies. Xylene contributes to photochemical ozone formation in the atmosphere (VOC precursor). This product does not contain ozone-depleting substances (ODS).
